🩸 Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes
Vacuum blood collection tubes (commonly known by the brand name Vacutainer or similar systems) are sterile, sealed glass or plastic tubes used to safely and efficiently collect and store blood samples for laboratory testing. They are the global standard for venipuncture.
Core Components and Function
The system is a closed method designed for hygiene and accuracy:
Tube: A sealed tube containing a pre-measured vacuum that automatically draws a precise volume of blood.
Needle: A double-ended needle; one end punctures the vein, and the other pierces the tube's rubber stopper.
Holder: A plastic sleeve that holds the needle and the tube, stabilizing the collection process.
🌈 Color-Coding System (Order of Draw)
The rubber stopper color indicates the tube's contents (additives) and the type of test the blood sample is suitable for. Using the correct tube in the proper Order of Draw is critical to prevent cross-contamination of additives, which could skew test results.
