Review:

Synopsis:

Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Duke begins to drive back to L.A., but after an odd run-in with a cop (Gary Busey), he returns to Sin City and continues his wild drug binge.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen. From beginning to end, every shot in this film is being distorted, manipulated, and the less than cohesive storytelling does not make this an easy viewing. You might read a review like that and come to the conclusion that its probably not as good as many have claimed. The thing is, all these aspects lend to the movies bizzare aesthetic. Because the story follows a man recalling his trip to Las vegas while under the influence of various drugs, the movie is not meant to be cohesive. Each story that Raoul tells in the film is a retelling of the rough memory he is able to come up with. The drugs distort his point of view to a point that all of his memories are exaggerated. As great as the movie is, its the performances by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro that made the movie what it was. Johnny Depp really lent himself to the role, even meeting and becomeing good friends with Hunter S. Thompson who wrote the book and helped write the movie. While it has its flaws, This movie will always be regarded as one of the most unique movies to ever be released.
