Synopsis:
Review:
Metal drummer Ruben (Ahmed) begins to lose his hearing. When a doctor tells him his condition will worsen, he thinks his career and life is over. His girlfriend Lou (Cooke) checks the former addict into a rehab for the deaf hoping it will prevent a relapse and help him adapt to his new life. After being welcomed and accepted just as he is, Ruben must choose between his new normal and the life he once knew.
Sound of Metal is a great example of sound design done right. Throughout the movie, we are continuously taken in and out of Ruben's perspective to see how he is perceiving everything we are. This makes watching the movie a very visceral experience. The film also does a fantastic job of using the absence of sound to convey the story through visuals. The movie wants you to understand that being deaf isn't necessarily a handicap and instead is just an alternative way of experiencing life. My favorite scene in the movie is the final one. When a church bell starts to ring, Ruben gets some very loud feedback on his new implant and decides to take it off. We then see him start to realise that silence was never that bad.
