Review:
Synopsis:
Struggling writer and wine enthusiast Miles (Paul Giamatti) takes his engaged friend, Jack (Thomas Haden Church), on a trip to wine country for a last single-guy bonding experience. While Miles wants to relax and enjoy the wine, Jack is in search of a fling before his wedding. Soon Jack is sleeping with Stephanie (Sandra Oh), while her friend Maya (Virginia Madsen) connects with Miles. When Miles lets slip that Jack is getting married, both women are furious, sending the trip into disarray.
After seeing most of Alexander Payne's filmography, Sideways still stands out as my favorite from his. While the movie follows a simple premise of two men-one with an alcohol addiction and one with a sex addiction-as they journey through wine country trying wine, the film works so well because of its heart. This is largely in part due to the performances of Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. These two share fantastic chemistry on screen and they each do a great job at embodying these characters. The script is the big highlight of this moving being both hilarious and heartfelt. It lends its self to the actors playing to their strengths. The Jazz score of the film gives it at very one of a kind style that isnt seen in many films. Overall this is an incredibly fun watch and ednlessly rewatchable.
